Roll Notes: 1996-P Jefferson Nickel – Spiked Head (SKH-5c-1996-p-04) Die Crack
This 1996-P Jefferson nickel was pulled during roll hunting and initially set aside late at night. On closer review, it matches a documented Spiked Head (SKH-5c-1996-p-04) variety listed on Cuds on Coins.
The defining diagnostic is a die crack that begins at Jefferson’s nostril and runs diagonally across the face, slightly passing above the vertical bar of the E in WE. A small but important detail is the visible gap between the crack and the letter, which distinguishes this coin from the other four Spiked Head varieties cataloged for the year.
Multiple SKH varieties are known for Jefferson nickels, but not all share the same crack path. In this case, the crack’s origin point, trajectory line up correctly with the Cuds on Coins entry. Earlier reference images make this feature difficult to see due to harsh lighting, but diffused side lighting clearly reveals the separation on this coin.
Spiked Head varieties represent an early stage of die failure and are often considered precursors to more dramatic retained cuds. While not all SKH examples carry significant premiums, attributed examples are far more desirable than raw coins due to the subtle nature of the diagnostics.
This coin is a good example of why careful re-examination matters, especially with varieties that rely on fine crack paths rather than bold doubling or missing elements.
